MADISON (WKOW) -- It's a tasty competition Wake Up Wisconsin's Dani Maxwell is very familiar with, the Wisconsin Grilled Cheese Championship.
Maxwell was a judge at the second annual event held at the Iowa County fairgrounds in Mineral Point. An event that was originally inspired by Californian farmers.
"When I was looking for how we could celebrate Wisconsin's dairy industry, and help bring recognition to local farmers, I went online and found that California had a grilled cheese invitational, " said Lorin Toepper, executive director of economic and workforce development at Madison Area Technical College. "So I stole their idea, and said if they can do it in California, then we can do it in Wisconsin, and we can do it better!"
The competition was divided into four categories; classic, classic plus one, classic plus extras, and classic dessert. The number one rule? All sandwiches must contain at least 60% Wisconsin cheese.
Contestants came from all over the state to compete for a year of bragging rights, a great trophy and most importantly, the joy of cooking with Wisconsin cheese!
