SHEBOYGAN (WKOW) -- A Wisconsin veteran who suffers from PTSD has a new best friend to help him deal with the anxiety and stress he feels every day.
Bill, a Vietnam veteran, is the first Wisconsin veteran to be paired up with a pet through the Pets for Vets program. He met his Cocker Spaniel/Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mix named Buddy this past weekend.
When Bill returned home from serving in the U.S. Navy, he started having anxiety and stress on a daily basis. He contacted Pets for Vets looking for a companion dog to help him cope with it. Having Buddy will help him get out of the house more, going on walks or trips to the dog park.
When Bill and Buddy first met Saturday, the two sat together on the couch for more than an hour, in silence, leaning against each other, Pets for Vets says.
The Wisconsin Chapter of Pets for Vets formed in 2012 and this was its first match. The second and third matches are already underway.
