Democrats meet for state convention this weekend

OCONOMOWOC (WKOW) -- The state Democratic Convention continues Saturday in Waukesha County.

Wisconsin's top Democrats are getting together in Oconomowoc this weekend for the annual convention. Lawmakers say they're concentrating on what they can do to gain more state senate seats.

"We have the opportunity to pick up a few seats in the next election, which is just 17 months away, even though the Republicans tried to quarantine themselves off with redistricting, a lot of these seats are more Democratic than ones we've picked up in the past," says Rep. Chris Larsen, Milwaukee's state senator.

On Friday, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin spoke to Democrats at the convention.
Meanwhile, Wisconsin's Republicans are sticking with their message, that things are better for the state since Governor Scott Walker took office.
"What Democrats didn't tell you at their convention is that when they controlled state government in the time leading up to Scott Walker's election, we saw record job loss, 133,000 jobs, we saw unemployment at 9.2 percent, spending out of control, double-digit tax hikes," says Joe Fadness, with the Republican Party of Wisconsin.

The state Republican Convention was held last month in the Wausau area.
