UPDATE: 5th victim dies in California shooting spree, suspect identified

SANTA MONICA, CA (WKOW) -- A fifth victim has died and a suspect has been identified in Friday's shooting rampage in California.

Santa Monica College officials say Marcela Franco, 26, died Sunday morning at a hospital. She and her father, Carlos Franco, 68, were driving to pick up books on campus when they were shot on Friday. Police say Carlos, a long-time employee at the college, was killed instantly. 

Marcela Franco's passing brings the death toll to five victims, and at least five others hurt. ABC News reports the suspect has been identified as John Zawahri, 23. The first two victims found Friday in a burning house have been identified as Zawahri's father and brother.

Zawahri was killed by officers in a shootout at the college library on campus.


SANTA MONICA, CA (WKOW) -- A woman who was critically wounded in the shooting rampage in Santa Monica has died, bringing the death toll from five to six.

Santa Monica College officials say 26-year-old Marcela Franco died Sunday, June 8th at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

She was a passenger in a Ford Explorer driven by her father.  Her father, 68-year-old campus employee Carlos Navarro Franco was also killed in the attack.

Police shot the gunman dead in the school's library on June 6th.

The shooter has not been identified because police are working to contact his next of kin.
