Election bill would allow online registration, bigger campaign donations

MADISON (WKOW) -- A bipartisan bill would change some election laws here in Wisconsin.

Lawmakers released details of the bill on Friday. It would allow people to register to vote online and double the limits on political donations.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the bill was a compromise between the parties, with both sides agreeing on higher contribution limits. For example, donors could give a candidate for governor up to $20,000 each, which is up from $10,000.

Supporters say allowing Wisconsin residents with valid ID to register online at a secure state website up to 20 days before an election would boost turnout at the polls.

An Assembly committee is expected to vote on the bill on Monday.
