UPDATE: Wounded victim fugitive, uncooperative with police

MADISON (WKOW) -- A man who was shot and wounded by intruders, as his wife was shot and killed, is a fugitive, wanted in Waukesha County.

Madison police officials say the 34-year old man was shot several times Wednesday night. They say his 25-year old wife was shot and killed.

"She was a beautiful person," her friend, Simone Lawrence tells 27 News. "She was dedicated to her family."

Madison police spokesperson Joel DeSpain says the shootings took place in front of at least two of the couple's three, young children.

DeSpain says the wounded man refuses to cooperate with police detectives.

DeSpain says two men entered the home at 732 North Thompson Drive and opened fire. DeSpain declines to comment on any motive.

Court records show Waukesha County authorities issued an arrest warrant for the 34-year old victim last month.

Records show the man was charged with two misdemeanor crimes, including possession of a controlled substance.

A source with knowledge of the victims tells 27 News the husband, wife and children have lived at the North Thompson Drive duplex for less than six months.

DeSpain says witnesses called 911 to report seeing a car possibly involved in the shootings. DeSpain had no other information on the suspects, other than the suspects were African-American.

DeSpain says detectives believe the victims were targeted.

"I know no one had a grudge against her," Simone tells 27 News.

Dane County court records show the woman failed to show up for a scheduled court appearance in a drunk driving case just hours before the shooting, and an arrest warrant was issued for her.

Lawrence says her friend worked for a Middleton assisted living facility.

The arrest warrant for the wounded man was issued in April.

DeSpain says the child witnesses are providing what information they can.

"The children are helping us. They're very traumatized, obviously," DeSpain says. "They're in a safe place."

"Their father is not being forthcoming," DeSpain says.

Authorities say the injuries to the man are not life-threatening.

27 News is not naming the victims until authorities identify them.
