PORTAGE (WKOW) -- The strong storm that moved through Wednesday evening damaged businesses and landscaping in Portage.
At the intersection of Thompson St. and Wauona Trail, a large tree -- splintered and bearing burn marks -- appears to have been hit by lightning.
Nearby on the 700 block of Thompson St., winds uprooted trees.
"It was crazy. It was raining so hard that you could not see outside. You couldn't see across the street. You couldn't see anything," said Dairy Queen employee Diane Stevens.
The business lost power for about 30 minutes, according to Stevens, after trees fell on nearby power lines.
Stevens says the winds were so bad that roof tiles on the building were ripped off, sending Dairy Queen employees running after to recover them in the pouring rain.
If the weather had worsened, Stevens says she and other employees would have sought shelter in the walk-in refrigerator.
