Competency examination for accused killer

MADISON (WKOW) -- A court commissioner Monday ordered a mental competency examination for a homeless man who's accused of beating a fellow homeless man to death.

Bail was also set at $105,000 for 31-year old Justin Brooks.

Authorities say Brooks used a wooden table leg to beat to death 61-year old Robert Kuntz near the Capitol square.

Brooks' friend, Charles Tucker says he's known for Brooks for eight years, attended programs for the homeless community with him, and never saw Brooks act violently.

Brooks' attorney, assistant state public defender Jon Helland says he believes Brooks' mental state may prevent him from understanding and participating in the court process.
