MADISON (WKOW) -- This week, agents from the Wisconsin Department of Revenue seized thousands of packs of contraband cigarettes.
More than 70,000 packs, without the required cigarette tax stamp, were shipped into the state from an unauthorized distributor out of Nebraska.
The street value of the seized contraband cigarettes is at least $430,000.
Wisconsin law states all cigarettes coming into Wisconsin for sale or distribution are subject to Wisconsin excise tax. Cigarettes must have stamps showing the tax has been paid before sale.
HCI Distribution was not registered with the DOR to distribute cigarettes and did not purchase the required stamps which show the Wisconsin excise tax had been paid. The excise tax here is $2.52 per pack.
The Department of Revenue works to ensure that all retailers, distributors and manufacturers comply with the law and are operating fairly.
