Veteran suicide survivor shares his story to stop alarming trend

MADISON (WKOW) -- Startling statistics about military veteran suicides has prompted one survivor to share his story.

Andrew O'Brien, from Texas, is an Iraq War veteran. He says he tried to take his own life after returning home.

On Saturday, he traveled to Madison to talk with a group of veterans and their families at Dryhootch. He's been traveling the country, hoping his message will help others adjusting to life after war.

"When they hear me speak and they hear about how I was feeling -- big thing about veterans and soldiers is -- I hope they realize they're not alone, because... I felt alone," says O'Brien.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, a veteran commits suicide every 65 minutes.

Dryhootch is a Wisconsin organization of veterans helping veterans. The group provides a number of services to people in our area.
