MADISON (WKOW)-- Going green seems to be the big thing these days. Two student-run groups at UW-Madison, the Office of Sustainability and We Conserve, are working to spread that message.
A handful of students and volunteers have set up donation drop-off sites all over downtown Madison. They're hoping that students will use them and recycle their items during this year's "Moving Days."
A majority of the student leases near campus will end on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Students have coined this yearly moving time "Hippie Christmas." Every year hundreds of couches, dressers, and electronics are put out on city streets. Other students simply throw everything they don't want into the dumpster. Volunteers are working to prevent that from happening.
"The most important thing is just not letting perfectly good stuff go into dumpsters and go in the landfill," UW student organizer Jake Kositzke says.
The two groups on campus have partnered with Goodwill and St. Vincent de Paul to pick up the donated items and put them to good use. The two groups have set up various pick-up sites in town.
Volunteers have also expanded their e-waste collection program. Students can drop off TV's, computers, video games, or any other appliances. The items will be taken to a company in Janesville that recycles the electronic components and puts them to good use.
Here's a schedule of all the drop sites that will be open this week:
