MADISON (WKOW) -- Electric car owners now have a quicker way to charge.
Madison Gas and Electric announced the first public electric vehicle quick charge station at Kelley's Market Mobil on East Washington Ave. near the Interstate.
The new unit can charge a vehicle battery to 80 percent capacity in less than 30 minutes.
"It's really important to have the supporting infrastructure as people are thinking about buying and using electric vehicles. They need to know the community is ready to support that new energy use," said Laura Williams, Market Development Manager at MG&E.
The utility company is conducting a multi-year study of charging equipment and electric vehicle drivers' needs. Vehicle charging has tripled each year since the beginning of the study in 2009.
