TOWN OF ALMA (WKOW) -- Around 9:30 Friday morning, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office received a call from the Black River Falls Hospital reporting a gunshot wound involving a four-year-old girl.
Deputies responded to the hospital to investigate what happened. Initial information shows the gunshot incident happened at a residence in the Town of Alma. The girl's six-year-old brother found a loaded shotgun and pointed it at his sister, and the gun discharged.
It has not been determined, at this time, how the shotgun discharged. Only one shot was fired and struck the little girl on the right side of her head. Her injuries are not life threatening.
It was determined the children did not have direct supervision at the time of the shooting, however, their father was home when the incident took place. He transported his daughter to Black River Memorial Hospital for treatment of her wound. The girl was treated and then transported to another hospital in LaCrosse for further care.
The incident remains under investigation. Jackson County Department of Health and Human Services was contacted and is assisting with the family and the investigation. Names are not being released due to this being a confidential juvenile matter.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the District Attorney's Office for review and possible criminal charges.
