MADISON (WKOW) -- Following an Madison police investigation, two suspects are now charged with several counts, including theft, specifically for taking two smart phones from State Street Brats, July 21.
In a recently filed criminal complaint, one suspect states "You can do it really fast, right in front of people and they don't even know it."
The suspect was talking with a detective about a rash of downtown bar thefts that took place earlier this summer. Victims reported lost smart phones, credit cards, wallets, and purses.
A 23-year old man had his phone taken from his back pocket. A 23-year-old woman says a man grabbed her wristlet and, only after she pushed him back, she realized it was unzipped and her new smart phone and credit card were missing.
Thanks to bar surveillance video, and images captured at a gas station where the thieves tried to use the stolen credit card, Rodney Harris, Jr. and Angelena Birt were taken into custody.
In the criminal complaint, one suspect states several thieves worked together taking "more than 50 credit cards and wallets". Stolen phones were typically sold for $20 each.
Madison Police continue to review cases, looking to arrest more suspects.
