MADISON (WKOW) -- Diners at the Bonfyre American Grille in Madison were interrupted Tuesday night by a shirtless man with a hammer.
Madison Police say witnesses reported the shirtless man with sagging pants was chasing another man through the dining room of the restaurant. The man being chased ran down a hallway and locked himself in a conference room. The shirtless man then grabbed a booster seat meant for children and banged on the conference room glass before walking back through the main dining room and leaving the restaurant and getting into the passenger seat of a waiting car.
According to an incident report, before entering the Bonfyre Grille the chase went through Silver Mine Subs next door where a table was broken when the shirtless man jumped on top of it. The restaurant, the sub shop and the conference room are all in the same building.
Police say before the chase started, the two men had been involved in a street fight. Witnesses reported seeing two men punching and kicking another man, and that one of the assailants chased after the downed man got up and ran away. They were last seen going into Silver Mine Subs.
Officers who responded to the fight found a gray t-shirt, black t-shirt and four dreadlocks on the sidewalk of Todd Dr.
Police found the man who had been chased, 18-year-old Demetrius Smith, nearby. Smith gave them a fake name and claimed not to know why he was being attacked. He was arrested for obstructing and on a felony theft warrant.
Officers also stopped the car the shirtless man had gotten in to. The driver said he didn't know the shirtless man very well, but was going to give him a ride. He said he kicked him out of his car when he saw he was armed with a hammer. The shirtless man was not found.
