APPLETON (WKOW) -- With the Boston Marathon bombing in April and recent debate over openly carrying firearms in downtown Appleton, Octoberfest organizers are now addressing security at the fall event.
Susan Vanden Heuvel, Octoberfest director, states they want to make sure vendors are aware and responsible of their surroundings.
Concerns recently arose over openly carrying weapons after police detained two men carrying AR-15 rifles on their way to the Appleton farmers market.
Vanden Heuvel says there are no restrictions on guns at Friday and Saturday's events and openly carrying a firearm is legal at Octoberfest. However, those who do so are prohibited from drinking alcohol.
Appleton police will be highly visible at the event, which draws nearly 100,000 people downtown.
