MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison police arrested 39-year-old Lee Robertson Wednesday after he faked his own kidnapping and allegedly took thousands of dollars and his ex-girlfriend's car.
Robertson convinced the 38-year-old Madison woman last November that he was being held by men who would either torture or kill him if she did not leave regular ransom payments at a Middleton mailbox. The victim stated she was also being threatened by the alleged kidnappers during phone calls.
The woman stopped making ransom payments just recently. She stated in July a man, whom she does not know, got into her vehicle and took it. She was told it was collateral to ensure the continued payments.
Wednesday afternoon, Madison police pulled the woman's car over and found Robertson behind the wheel. He admitted to orchestrating the bogus kidnapping.
Robertson was arrested for driving or operating a vehicle without consent and threats to injure.
The investigation into this matter is ongoing. MPD thanks Middleton Police for their assistance.
