REEDSBURG (WKOW) -- Just after noon Monday, Columbia County Sheriff's deputies were called to a single vehicle accident on Highway 33, just east of County Road H, near Reedsburg.
The initial report was the vehicle's driver was non-responsive and the passenger was injured in the crash.
Preliminary investigation confirms the vehicle was west on Highway 33. The car entered the south ditch and continued west on a gravel farm drive, crashing into a tree.
The driver, 86-year-old Clayton R. Dumke, of rural Portage, was transported via MedFlight to UW Hospital, and later died.
Dumke's 84-year-old passenger was also taken to UW Hospital for injuries sustained.
Dumke had been wearing a seat belt. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.
Assisting the Sheriff's Office were Pardeeville EMS, Cambria Fire, Divine Savior Hospital, Friesland Fire, Sauer's Towing of Cambria, and the Columbia County Highway Department.
The crash remains under investigation.
