MADISON (WKOW) --- Bucky Badger is celebrating turning 73 Wednesday.
The mascot at UW Madison was first copyrighted on October 2, 1940.
According to UWBadgers.com, the first ever badger outfit was worn for homecoming in 1949 and included a paper-mache head.
At first, the badger did not have a name and was referred to as Buddy, Bernie, Bobby, among many others.
It was a naming contest that gave Bucky the name, Buckingham U. Badger.
At one point, in 1973, Bucky almost lost his mascot privileges when the assistant attorney general wanted to replace him with Henrietta Holstein. That obviously did not make it.
