No. 3 Wisconsin opens season with 5-2 win over Northern Michigan
MADISON, Wis. – The No. 3 Wisconsin men's hockey team (1-0-0) won its season-opener, 5-2, over Northern Michigan (0-1-0) Friday night at the Kohl Center. The win marks the Badgers first win in a season-opening game since the 2007-08 season.
Ten different Wisconsin players tallied points in the win, including freshman forwards Grant Besse and Jedd Soleway, who recorded a goal and an assist, respectively, for their first career points as Badgers.
Forwards Michael Mersch (1 goal, 1 assists), Mark Zengerle (2 assists), Nic Kerdiles (2 assists), Tyler Barnes (1 goal, 1 assists) and McCabe (1 goal, 1 assists ) all recorded multi-point games for UW.
Kerdiles' two points stretches his point-scoring streak to 13 games dating back to last season.
Junior goaltender Landon Peterson turned away 18 of 20 pucks for his first win of the season.
The Badgers were 1-for-7 on the power play and 7-for-9 on the penalty kill. Junior defenseman Jake McCabe also scored a short-handed goal for Wisconsin.
