MADISON (WKOW)-- A petition is going around town to rename the gateway at Madison College in honor of Al and Jan Studesville.
The couple died on June 4th while vacationing in Texas. They were riding their motorcycle when a truck driver crossed the center line and hit them head on.
When Bob Fuller heard about the accident he wanted to do something to honor their memory. After talking with his wife and a few friends the group decided to start a petition to rename the gateway at Madison College in Al and Jan's honor.
"There's just so many people whose lives they touched," Fuller says.
The first time Fuller met the Studesvilles was back in 2004. He had recently lost his job after the dairy company he worked for decided to close their doors. Al Studesville was assigned to be his dislocated worker counselor and helped him to start his own business.
"He would help you. I think he understood it because at one time he was a dislocated worker himself," Fuller says.
That simple act of generosity inspired Fuller to start the petition, which now has more than 1,200 signatures. The long list of names includes seven state lawmakers who represent Dane County, Madison Mayor Paul Soglin and countless community leaders.
"It's unbelievable the stories that I have heard. As well as the online petition comments people left," Fuller says.
The group says they started the petition to rename the gateway after the Studesvilles, because they feel that Al and Jan were pretty much gateways themselves. They created opportunities and opened doors for countless people in the community.
"Just people all over the community really knew them and everybody has something good to say about them," Fuller says.
The petition was presented to the Madison College District Board on Wednesday.
