DICKEYVILLE (WKOW) -- The Grant County Sheriff's office is warning people about a phone scam claiming to be the Grant County Sheriff collecting loan money.
Officials say they were made aware of the scam by the Dickeyville Police Department after one person was swindled out of about $1,100. The caller first claimed to be with the New York Bureau of Criminal Investigation and told the recipient they owed money for a loan they took out. The second time they called back, scammer said he was Grant County Sheriff Nate Dreckman.
The real Nate Dreckman wants everybody to know someone is using his name to facilitate this scam. The Grant County Sheriff's Office says it does not make phone calls to collect debts and if officials receive a court order to collect a debt, it would be done in person by a uniformed Deputy Sheriff.
Authorities warn to never give out information to someone who calls unsolicited. Any questions or concerns about phone scams should be directed to you local law enforcement.
