UPDATE (WKOW)-- Fire investigators were on scene late into the night to determine what caused a fire on Madison's East side. A man was found dead inside the apartment where investigators believe the fire originated. No details yet on who this man was or how old he was.
Fire fighters were called to the 6400 block of Bridge Road in Madison at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. They were able to knock down the fire within a few minutes. Investigators were allowed into the building, but later found that the fire was still going.
"There was smoke coming from one of the walls and that was the start of a rekindle," Madison Fire Department Spokesman Lori Wirth says.
Smoke started pouring out the roof of the building and fire fighters were called back to the scene just after 6:00 p.m. A ladder was extended to the roof and fire fighters quickly put out the rekindled fire.
"There are a lot of factors that contribute to it. Even opening a door to the apartment and introducing additional oxygen can be one of the things that happens," Wirth says.
Residents we spoke to on scene say fire alarms in the hallway started ringing at 3:30 in the afternoon. They started banging on neighbors doors to warn everyone else in the building.
One woman said she went to the apartment where the fire originated, but wasn't able to go in and check for anyone inside because the smoke was too thick and the flames were too hot. That apartment and two others are no longer habitable.
"The apartment directly next door to the first unit has some damage in the roof," Wirth explains.
The unit directly below the fire also received significant damage. Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire.
