Accused drunk driver arrested in connection with two hit-and-run crashes

MADISON (WKOW) -- A 21-year-old Verona man was arrested for drunk driving Wednesday night after two hit-and-run crashes in Madison.

According to a Madison Police report, Derek Thompson was arrested on tentative charges of second offense operating while intoxicated, operating while revoked, operating without insurance, hit and run, and displaying unauthorized registration plate.

Thompson is accused of hitting two vehicles with his van on Fish Hatchery Road near High Street around 11:00 p.m. Wednesday. Police say Thompson first sideswiped a vehicle driven by a 21-year-old woman. The impact sent the woman's car spinning so forcefully it bent its axle.

Police say Thompson continued to drive, but then hit another vehicle driven by a 35-year-old man. The man's vehicle jumped a curb and rested against a utility pole.

Fitchburg police later located Thompson's van near Fish Hatchery Road and McKee Road. Officials say Thompson tried to walk away from the vehicle, but officers matched a license plate that fell off of the van to the vehicle and arrested Thompson.

Thompson failed field sobriety tests and blew .20 on a preliminary breath test.

No significant injures were reported.
