27 Kids Who Matter: Brad & Jaycob

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- From shy to smiling. The Big Brothers Big Sisters program can really transform those who get involved. It's a little commitment to make a big difference.

Brad Nelson made the commitment two years ago and was paired up with Jaycob, who was seven at the time. When 27 News caught up with them, they were practicing formations on the field. Passing and punting, but this sports-loving duo is more concerned with formations in life. Brad says, "It's very important. I was lucky enough to have my father and brothers as mentors for me and they showed me the way, helped me a lot in life and you're helping kids meet their full potentials.:

They share a quick wit, a ready smile and love being active. "We have a lot in common for being 30 years apart. We like going to laser tag, playing catch, going to Vitense, batting cages."

For Brad, getting involved was both natural and easy, "I always felt the need to be a type of mentor type person, the mentor role, I felt this would be a good way to do that."

He says the staff at BBBS gave him the support he needed so he could do that same for Jaycob.

They both love math and spend plenty of time reading with weekly trips to the library. Of course, there are also other fun outings like meeting Donald Driver, or hitting the skies. Brad says Jaycob has gotten to fly an airplane.

The two are now a part of each other's family, Brad saying, "He'll give me a hug once and awhile." A great team on the field and in life.
