WI sheriff's deputy injured by jail inmate

MADISON (WKOW) -- A Dane County sheriff's deputy was hurt while trying to move a jail inmate to another cell.

The sheriff's office says the deputy was working in the Public Safety Building Thursday when he learned that a 34-year-old man was showing signs of hurting himself.

The deputy talked to the man and called for mental health and nursing staff to evaluate him. The inmate agreed to move to another cell where he could be more closely monitored, but when deputies entered his cell he became combative and started fighting with them.

One of the deputies had to be taken to UW Hospital, where he learned he suffered a fractured shoulder. He was treated and released but will miss work for several weeks.

The inmate was taken to Mendota Mental Health Institute.
