MADISON (WKOW) -- With the cold and snow, authorities want to make sure you're protecting yourself.
They say you should bundle up and avoid being outside for long periods of time. When you're inside, if you're using a space heater, be careful of what's near it and check the cord to make sure there's no fraying.
"Unfortunately, some of these things can lead to fires. They're probably, you know, the number one cause of fire, sometimes is the misuse of heating materials," Milwaukee Fire Chief Ray Groth says.
You'll also want to make sure your car is stocked with a winter survival kit that should include things like water, snack foods, a first aid kit and booster cables.
