BEAVER DAM (WKOW) -- Shortly before midnight Thursday morning, a Beaver Dam police officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation near the intersection of Madison and Rowell Streets.
Rather than stop, the driver of the vehicle started picking up speed, traveling south on Madison Street. A pursuit was in place, reaching speeds near 80 miles per hour.
The pursuit continued onto County Highway G, where speeds then reached 95 miles per hour. Once the pursuit reached County Highway DE and Forest Road, the suspect vehicle crashed near the entrance of a trailer park. Extensive damage was done to mailboxes near the park.
The driver, a 21-year-old Beaver Dam man, took off on foot into a nearby trailer. He was taken into custody a short time later.
The driver faces charges of operating while intoxicated-1st offense, vehicle operator fleeing or eluding a traffic officer, failure to stop at a flashing red light, unreasonable and imprudent speed, and failure to stop at a stop sign. He was also taken into custody on a probation hold.
A PBT test administered at the scene showed the driver had a result of .197. The pursuit lasted about 4 minutes and approximately 4.2 miles.
The driver should make his initial appearance Thursday in Dodge County Circuit Court.
