WI utility's holiday suggestions can save money

GREEN BAY (WKOW) -- A Green Bay utility is offering a number of holiday suggestions to help lower electric bills or benefit local charities.

Wisconsin Public Service says an easy way to save money is to switch from tradition holiday lights to LEDs. Conventional light strings are cheaper, but they can cost 10 times more to operate.

The utility also recommends connecting holiday lights using a programmable on/off timer switch, rather than leaving lights on through the night.

WPS also suggests several practical presents. For example, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors can save a person's life, and they cost between $20 and $70.

Some people give utility gift certificates, which can be given to neighbors, schools and charities. WPS says it sold 5,500 gift certificates last year. The average amount was $25.
