Mega Millions scam surfaces in Madison

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Thursday afternoon, an older Madison woman called the Self Report Unit with Madison Police Department to say she received a call from "Tom Young".

The man claimed to be with Mega Millions and had told the woman she won $250,000 and a new 2014 Mercedes-Benz.  However, in order to receive the prizes she would need to pay "IRS service taxes" and a $325 registration fee.

"Mr. Young" did not get any further in his conversation.  The woman had told the man she needed to talk with her attorney and police to verify what he was saying was true.

The man immediately hung up the phone.
