Fond du Lac shelter planning to expand cramped quarters

FOND DU LAC (AP) -- A Fond du Lac animal shelter is hoping to expand next year so it can provide more space for the thousands of animals that arrive each year.

A Reporter Media report ( ) says the Fond du Lac Humane Society has raised $350,000 of the necessary $600,000. Officials hope to attract more donations and begin work next fall.

The shelter has had issues with quarters so cramped that officials don't have room to isolate sick animals. This year a virus outbreak led to the deaths of nine puppies.

Shelter manager Renee Webb says between 1,500 and 2,000 animals arrive at the shelter each year. She says that raises the urgency for more room.

She says most donors are older, so the shelter is trying to get younger people involved in the venture.
