Rescue mission gets stuck trying to save stranded ship near Antarctica

ANTARCTICA (WKOW) -- A mission to rescue a Russian ship stranded near Antarctica has run into trouble itself.

A Chinese ice-breaker was sent to rescue a research vessel that has been trapped in a frozen sea for the past four days. It was the first of three ice-breaking rescue ships, but became stuck itself on the way.

Crews on the stranded research ship, the MV Akademik Shokalskiy, have made contact to let everyone know they're alright.

"The vessel hasn't moved for the last two days and we're surrounded by sea ice. We just can't get through," says Professor Chris Turney, expedition leader. "Everyone is safe, the vessel is perfectly safe but we can't make a passage forward."
The ship is not in danger of sinking and there are ample supplies for the 74 people aboard, who say they had a great Christmas, despite being stuck.
