MADISON, Wis. -- Following his 10-point, four-rebound outing in Wisconsin's 80-43 win over Prairie View A&M on Saturday, Nigel Hayes earned the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week award, the conference announced on Monday.
The Toledo, Ohio, native went 6-for-9 (.667) from the free throw line and added three blocks, two assists and a steal in Saturday's victory. The freshman has reached double figures in each of the last two games and is averaging 13.5 points per game during that span. Hayes averaged 4.0 points per game during the first 11 games of the season.
Hayes is shooting 19-of-26 (.731) from the free throw line during UW's last two games, pouring in a career-high 17 points in an 88-43 win over Eastern Kentucky on Dec. 14.
Hayes, who is fifth on the team averaging 5.5 points per game, is the second Wisconsin freshman to earn the honor in the last two seasons. Sam Dekker was the last Badgers player to earn the award, as he was named freshman of the week twice by the Big Ten in 2013 (Jan. 14, March 4).
