MILTON (WKOW) -- Officials have identified the man hit on northbound I-39 as 19-year-old Sean Odegaard from Brooklet, Georgia.
The Wisconsin State Patrol says Odegaard pulled onto the shoulder after seeing a bag or piece of luggage laying in the road at mile marker 165 near Milton. He then got out of the car and walked onto the roadway to pick it up.
A semi driving in the right lane saw Odegaard but was not able to stop in time. The driver, 54-year-old Charles Gresham from Harrison Boone, Arkansas, wasn't hurt.
Odegaard was taken to Mercy Hospital in Janesville with life-threatening injuries.

Troopers say that around 10:50 a.m. Wednesday, the man ran out into traffic to retrieve a suitcase. The man has a head injury, but the severity of the injury isn't known.
Part of I-39 Northbound at mile marker 165 near Milton was shut down while emergency crews responded. The State Patrol says the crash scene was cleared around 1 p.m.
