Watch idling vehicles during cold weather to avoid theft

EAU CLAIRE (WKOW) -- Police say if you're planning to run your car's engine to avoid problems in the cold weather, make sure to keep an eye on it.

Eau Claire police tell WQOW-TV more than 200 cases of break-ins were reported, about 50 others involved stolen vehicle parts last year.

"What we find is that vehicles that are unlocked, that have keys left in them and that have valuables left in plain sight are the targets of car entries and car thefts," says Kyle Roder, with Eau Claire police.

Roder suggests drivers should take valuables out of the car, put them in the trunk or put them out of view.
Police say keeping car doors locked is the best defense, because often thieves won't take the extra effort to damage the car just to get inside. They typically target unlocked vehicles to avoid creating a scene.
