MADISON (WKOW) -- An early morning snack led to a frigid evacuation for some state workers in Madison Monday morning.
A state spokesperson says a bag of burning popcorn triggered a fire alarm and forced hundreds of workers from the GEF 1 building around 9:30 a.m. Monday.
The building is about a block from the Capitol, so many of the employees fled to the warm confines of the Capitol and escaped a wind chill factor hovering around -40.
Department of Administration spokeswoman Stephanie Marquis says someone burned the popcorn in a third floor kitchenette.
The four-story GEF 1 building houses the state Department of Workforce Development and Department of Children and Families.
