WAUNAKEE (WKOW) -- The Waunakee Fire Chief confirms one person died and two others were taken to the hospital after a fire at a senior housing facility in Waunakee.
Firefighters were called to the building in the 400 block of O'Malley Street around 8 p.m. Fire Chief Gary Acker tells 27 News the facility is near the fire department so crews were there quickly and put out the fire in about 15 to 20 minutes.
Acker says the two people taken to the hospital had injuries that are not considered to be life-threatening.
He says people evacuated from the building were taken to the fire station, where the American Red Cross was helping to find them places to stay.
Firefighters believe the fire started in a kitchen area. The state fire marshal was called in to help in the investigation.
Chief Acker says two units of the 16-unit complex were damaged. He says the other units are intact.
