TOWN OF WAUSAU (WKOW) -- Area residents near a Wausau home that exploded this morning are being asked to evacuate.
Marathon County Sheriff's Department officials say the bomb squad is on scene. They say the squad is seeing if the scene is safe to determine if crews can go back inside.
Officials believe the cause of the explosion could be from ammunition or fireworks.
Lt. Ryan Weber says it is unknown if there are any injuries at this time or if anyone was inside the home at the time of the explosion.
"If someone was in there, they'd never survive that," said Town of Wausau Fire Chief Kevin Yolitz.
Officials say the call came in around 6:45 Thursday morning. They say it happened on the 8000 block of Pioneer Lane. That's northeast of the city of Wausau.
"I've got a captain that lives right next to the homestead here and his house windows and house just shook. He said he'd never felt anything like that before and it just rattled his windows and that's not that far away," said Yolitz.
Yolitz said one person lives at the one-story home. He says crews are working to get into the basement of the home.
The state fire marshal is on scene as well as multiple crews from across the area.
