UPDATE: Man who jumped into quarry dies, deputy hurt

PEWAUKEE (WKOW) -- A suicidal man who jumped into a Waukesha County quarry Saturday night has died.

According to the Waukesha County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to the Waukesha Lime and Stone Company in Pewaukee around 8 p.m. When deputies arrived, they found a 24-year-old Waukesha man who had driven his vehicle through a fence to get to the quarry.

Officials say deputies began negotiating with the man, but the man jumped over the edge. He was airlifted to a hospital where he died.

WISN-TV reports a sheriff's deputy suffered an ankle injury after slipping on the ice at the quarry. The deputy was treated and released from the hospital.

Authorities are still investigating the incident.

PEWAUKEE (AP) -- Officials rescued a man who jumped into a Waukesha County quarry Saturday.

Authorities received a call from the man's family around 8 p.m. to report that he may be suicidal.

Deputies arrived and found the 23-year-old man had rammed his car through a fence at Waukesha Lime and Stone Company.  Then, he walked to the edge of the quarry.

Captain Michelle Larsuel told WTMJ-TV that officials tried to negotiate with him, but he jumped into the quarry. 

Due to icy conditions, authorities had a hard time reaching the man.  One deputy slipped and injured his ankle.

Deputies rescued the man. He was flown to the hospital to be treated for severe injuries.
