MARINETTE (WKOW) -- Wisconsin's republican U.S. Senator Ron Johnson is vowing to keep Navy ships coming out of Marinette Marine.
Johnson is reacting to a Pentagon recommendation to order 20 fewer ships from the shipbuilder.
He's concerned a smaller contract could lead to job losses.
Marinette Marine employs about 1,400 people.
Johnson acknowledged some initial problems with the ships, but he says those are in the past.
"Sounds to me like most of those problems have been solved. The Navy is very satisfied with this ship and they're committed to the 52 ships. If we're going to be able to project our values throughout the world, you do need a pretty strong Navy."
Johnson says the Pentagon official who wrote the memo is only temporarily in her role, and she may not speak for the Department of Defense.
