GOP representative from Door County will not seek re-election

MADISON (WKOW) -- Representative Gary Bies will not seek re-election to the State Assembly.

The Door County Advocate newspaper quoted a news release from Rep. Bies, saying, "Tomorrow I will file my Notice of Non-Candidacy to seek an eighth term in the state Assembly. I am very grateful to the citizens of the First Assembly District who've supported me with their vote to be their Representative for the past seven terms.

Bies, a Republican from Sister Bay, was first elected to the Assembly in 2000.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos released a statement in response to the news Bies would retire when his current term expires at the end of the year. It reads,  "I would like to thank Representative Gary Bies for his long-term commitment to the citizens of Wisconsin and the 1st Assembly District.  He has served 14 years in the Wisconsin State Assembly and our state is better off because of his dedication to passing legislation that improves the lives and safety of residents around the state."
