Meriter Hospital to close inpatient pediatric unit

MADISON (WKOW) -- Meriter Hospital in Madison will shut down its inpatient pediatric unit at the end of February.

The hospital says the 3-bed unit sees less than one inpatient per day.

"Advances in preventive care, technology and treatment options make it possible for most patients to be treated and sent home the same day. Meriter sees 7,000 pediatric patients in its Emergency Department each year and 98 percent are able to go home the same day," said Jim Woodward, President and CEO of Meriter Health Services. "Many of those who need to be admitted are already being appropriately transferred to American Family Children's Hospital. This is simply a continuation of this practice and an opportunity to be a good steward of our patients' health care dollars."

Meriter will continue to provide emergency, outpatient, infant care and primary care to pediatric patients.
