WAUNAKEE (WKOW) -- Clear Horizons Dane LLC reports there has been a second leak at the Dane Community Digester facility in Waunakee.
The spill on Monday evening released an estimated 20,000 gallons of manure from the system due to a pipe burst.
They report the material was contained and recovered immediately. No manure left the project site and there was no impact to surface waters according to Clear Horizons LLC.
This is now the second spill in two months for the manure digester. After the November 2013 spill Clear Horizons commissioned an engineering study of the plant. They say that information from the study was just released to them last week.
That study concluded that ground settling or slight pipe movement caused the pipes to fail at the elbow in the November incident. They also say that is likely what caused the pipe failure this week as well.
Clear Horizons says they are immediately implementing corrective actions to install flexible connectors at the elbows of the pipes to prevent future failures. They will also install aditional monitoring devices that would isolate and shut the system down if a similar failure occurs.
