At least 3 dead in massive Indiana pileup

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WKOW) -- Investigators now say at least 3 people are dead and more than 20 hurt in a massive pileup on I-94 in northwestern Indiana.

Indiana state police say the crash involved about 15 semis and 15 other cars and trucks.

It happened near Michigan City, which is about 60 miles from Chicago, Illinois.

Police brought in buses to keep people warm, and to take others to the hospital.

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WKOW) -- At least two people are dead after a big pileup on I-94 near Michigan City, Indiana.

Authorities say the crash involved at least a dozen semis and "too many vehicles to count."
LaPorte County Coroner John Sullivan told WLS-TV in Chicago that "there may be many more fatalities" because some people may be trapped in the wreckage. Sullivan said teams of coroners from surrounding counties were called to the scene.

At least 7 people were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Three are said to be in critical condition. Another 15 to 20 people whose injuries are less severe were taken by a bus to a local hospital.

Authorities have also brought in warming buses for those whose vehicles were involved in the crash. Officials are diverting cars off the highway due to the crash.

LAPORTE COUNTY (WKOW) -- Two people are dead after a massive pile-up on I-94 near Michigan City in Indiana.

The LaPorte County Coroner says multiple cars are under semi-trucks and crews have not been able to get to them yet.

The Indiana Department of Transportation says, "Lake effect snow, blowing snow, and bitterly cold temperatures continue to make many roads dangerously slick."
