MCFARLAND (WKOW) -- A McFarland high school graduate is one of 32 people in the country chosen to receive a Rhodes Scholarship. 2009 graduate Drew Birrenkott is currently a fifth year senior at UW-Madison and will mix biochemistry, biomedical engineering and political science in his studies at England's Oxford University.
On Friday, his former high school held "Drew Birrenkott Day" to celebrate his academic achievements.
Drew says, "It's really fantastic to come back to my high school and sort of get to celebrate. And get to celebrate education in general and so you know the Rhodes Scholarship is an individual award, but the high school is really taking it and we get a chance to really celebrate education in general, which I think is fantastic and really exciting."
Besides triple majoring at UW, Birrenkott also helped design an infant cardiorespiratory monitor, and worked in Kenya and Tanzania on water irrigation projects.
