UPDATE: Firefighters battle flames, cold at Atlas Ave. fire

MADISON (WKOW) -- As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, some Madison firefighters are still at the scene of a warehouse fire on Atlas Avenue.

The east side building went up in flames shortly after 6 a.m. Tuesday.  The warehouse at Windsor Building Systems is a total loss.

Lori Wirth, with the Madison Fire Department, says there were people inside the warehouse at the time of the fire, but they were all able to evacuate by the time fire crews arrived.  No one suffered any injuries.

Crews remain on scene, supervising, as part of the building is being torn down and they want to make sure the fire doesn't re-ignite.

MADISON (WKOW) -- Firefighters in Madison are battling brutal weather as they continue to work at the scene of an East Side warehouse fire.

Fire Chief Steven Davis says the warehouse at Windsor Building Systems is a total loss.  The business constructs decking and wall panels.  Crews were able to stop the blaze from spreading to buildings nearby.

The warehouse was full of wood products, Davis says.

The emergency call came in around 6 a.m. sending 65 firefighters to 314 Atlas Avenue to help contain the blaze.  According to Davis, the sub-zero weather was a big challenge for crews and will continue to be a problem for much of the day.

Firefighters expect to be at the scene all day and night, some will likely stay overnight to ensure the fire doesn't flare up again.

Crews are working in rotating shifts, spending time thawing out on warming buses.  Davis says the water they were using to extinguish the flames was freezing before it could hit the ground and gumming up the department's pumps.  They also discovered many hydrants in the area were frozen.

No injuries have been reported and all warehouse employees were able to escape safely.

MADISON (WKOW) -- Firefighters in Madison are battling brutal weather as they continue to work at the scene of warehouse fire on the city's East Side.  An emergency call came in at 6:12 a.m. Tuesday morning, indicating that a fire broke out at Windsor Building Systems, a business that builds decking and wall panels, at 314 Atlas Ave.

"Crews are on the defensive. Nobody is going into the building," said Lori Wirth, of the Madison Fire Department.

Wirth says there are several buildings in the complex that firefighters are trying to protect; however, the weather is causing problems.

"The water is freezing as soon as it hits the ground and it's gumming up the pumps," Wirth said.

Wirth says fire crews will be at the scene for most of the day. Even when they are able to extinguish it, they will be there preventing any rekindling.
