How will school districts make up missed days?

Posted:

WISCONSIN (WKOW) -- Many school districts are faced with tough choices after having to cancel school this winter an unusual number of times.

Districts across the region have had to cancel between three and five days of class so far this winter. Some have built in snow days, but others are faced with making up days of lost time.

The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District closed both Monday and Tuesday this week. Adding that to the two days canceled earlier this month because of the bitter cold, and school officials are left with a complicated dilemma.

State law requires 175 days of class each school year. MCPASD spokesperson Perry Hibner tells 27 News the district will likely only make it to 173 and will have to find a way to make up two days.

The district has several options to choose from to make up those days.

"Other options, besides either getting rid of professional development days or adding to the end of the school year, would be shortening up spring break or coming back to school on Saturday," Hibner says. "We don't think either of those are very good options."

School officials would prefer to add days to the end of the school year. Right now, class is supposed to be in session until June 10. The district may propose to extend school until June 12 but will have to consult with the teachers' union, because the school calendar is part of teachers' bargaining contract.

The typical winter cancellation is just one school day for the whole season. Some schools are faced with finding time to make up five days.
