LA GRANGE (WKOW) -- Fire crews spent 15 hours fighting a four-alarm fire at the S&R Egg Farm in Walworth County Friday night. The barn is at a total loss.
Our Milwaukee affiliate WISN-TV reports a call for a barn fire came in around 7:45 p.m. By the time firefighters arrived, the barn that held 300,000 chickens was in flames.
In a statement, S&R Egg Farm said the fire destroyed one of the 14 barns at the farm. No people were hurt and the company plans to rebuild.
Lauderdale/La Grange Fire Chief John Duerst says between 280,000 and 300,000 chickens died. The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time.
"The building itself and the contents were pretty well damaged and having to dig through it to put it out at this point we're probably going to call it undetermined," says Duerst.
Firefighters say firewalls helped protect the other 13 barns on the farm.

According to its website, S&R is a third-generation, family-owned and operated farm that first opened in 1958.
