Village officials warn about freezing pipes

PRAIRIE DU SAC (WKOW) -- Officials in the Villages of Prairie du Sac and Sauk City are warning residents and businesses they may be at a higher risk for freezing pipes.

Alan Wildman, a village administrator, said due to the extreme frost depths of five feet of more in the area, the two utilities are concerned there is a higher risk of water laterals freezing.

Water customers are now being asked to check the temperature of the water coming into their residence or business.

Wildman said normal groundwater temperatures are in the upper 40s and lower 50s. He says you should use a thermometer that will measure low enough to check the temperature of the water at a point closest to where it enters the structure, like a faucet in a basement nearest the water meter.

If the water temperature is close to 38⁰F or lower, please contact your respective utility as soon as possible by calling the Village of Prairie du Sac at 608-643-2421 or the Village of Sauk City at 608-643-3932.
