MERRILL (WKOW) -- As the propane shortage continues, ice fisherman are being reminded to lock down their ice shanties.
The warning comes after a string of propane tank thefts in northern Wisconsin.
Officers say two tanks were stolen from an unsecured ice shack on Lake Alexander in Merrill. Authorities are reminding fisherman with permanent shacks to lock down their gear before leaving the ice.
Tim Fischer with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department says, "There is a crisis right now. Propane is expensive right now. Anywhere from 4-6 dollars a pound right now and people, like I said, are going to be looking for something free."
Authorities say the best option is to take your propane items home, instead of leaving them in the shack.
